Neva Masquerade

The Neva Masquerade is a unique feline breed that shares many similarities with the Siberian cat, except for its distinctive coat pattern. These cats are exceptionally beautiful, and anyone who has the opportunity to see one will undoubtedly be impressed. If you’re in the market for a new feline friend, the Neva Masquerade should be at the top of your list. Here’s everything cat enthusiasts should know about this rare and delightful breed.

History of Breeds

The Neva Masquerade, one of the most fascinating cat breeds, was established during the late 70s and early 80s. Although not the oldest breed, its origin story is intriguing. The breed was created by breeding the Siamese with other cat breeds, specifically the Siberian.

The breeding took place in St. Petersburg, near the Neva River, which was also the location of a traditional masquerade.

Hence, the breed was named after the river and the masquerade.

The pointed pattern in these cats is a recessive trait. Nevertheless, if two Siberians with a single color mate, their offspring may exhibit a Neva Masquerade pattern.

Breeders of cats nowadays have access to tests that enable them to selectively breed Siberians with these genes.

The Neva Masquerade cats bear a striking resemblance to the Siberian cat, possessing similar traits such as sturdy hind legs, bushy tails, big ears and eyes, and thick fur. However, the distinguishing feature of the Neva Masquerade is its distinct color pattern, which sets it apart as a separate breed rather than a mere variation of the Siberian breed. While some registries recognize it as a distinct breed, others classify it as a variation of the Siberian breed. Prospective owners should pay attention to the following key characteristics of the Neva Masquerade.

Both the Neva Masquerade and the Siberian cat share a common coat type, which is triple-layered and water-resistant. This is not unexpected, given that these felines evolved in the frigid Russian environment and required thick fur to stay warm and protected.

The nature of one’s personality.

The Neva Masquerade has a temperament similar to that of the Siberian breed. They enjoy being showered with affection and attention from their owners and are known to be shadow-cats, following their humans wherever they go. They are well-behaved and make great pets for families with children.

These cats are also quite vocal and communicate their emotions through various sounds such as meows, purrs, trills, and chirps.
